On opening up Mad Mad Monkey, you would not be blamed for thinking that it was going to be a low-quality slot game. On the offset, it feels a little bit cheesy, but very quickly, we find that opinion changing for the better.
There is little to no background to speak of, which is a shame considering it is a jungle theme and other competitors usually pull all the stops out by creating incredible pieces of artwork to keep us entertained, but Mad Mad Monkey seems to think it doesn’t need to. Taking a look at the playboard that is in front of us, we can see some highly stylised symbol artwork, though it is a little bit dated in comparison to slots that aren’t 10 years old, what NextGen Gaming has produced is, for its time a strong slot, especially when we consider the high likelihood that it was an intentional decision to hold back on the graphical side so to keep it running smoothly on mobile devices.
They have done their best to find a mid-ground between holding back on visual quality and creating small details to give the slot a sense of engagement. Mad Mad Monkey is an interesting slot, and there is a definite charm to it, perhaps the nostalgia of the old era slots and old retro PC games is what makes us want to spin the reels; perhaps its that cheeky monkey. The answer is a little unclear, but it made for a great slot to have a couple of spins on.
Whilst it is unlikely to become anyone’s next absolute favourite, it is definitely a contender to sit in our favourites folder for when we would like a little break from the newer slots that have picked up the trend of having all of the freshest ideas on game mechanics and bonus games, which at the time wasn’t really an option.
From the sole perspective of payouts, the base game was great, particularly when the wilds came into play, though in our testing, this didn’t seem to be parroted in the free spins bonus round, which seemed much more of a slog.
All in all, Mad Mad Monkey is definitely worth a couple of spins but won’t be topping any rating charts any time soon. We rate this slot as a 5/10 slot.
